When the Pump Runs Dry — And Nobody Is Watching
In food processing and cold chain infrastructure, water is not a utility — it is a process input. Chiller circuits, CIP (clean-in-place) wash lines, booster sets feeding hygiene stations, fire hydrant pumps in cold storage warehouses, and submersible sets supplying RO pre-treatment — every one of these pump loops is a single-point-of-failure waiting to be exposed. And the failure mode that engineers consistently underestimate is the quiet one: dry-running.
A submersible pump running dry for as little as 30–90 seconds can seize its mechanical seal, score the impeller and overheat the winding insulation beyond recovery. What a Good Motor Protection Relay Must Do for Pump Applications

Phase loss — complete loss of one phase — is catastrophic for a three-phase pump motor within seconds. Any three-phase protection relay used on pump duty must respond to both conditions, not just phase loss.
3. Locked-Rotor and Overload Protection
Submersible pumps in sumps with suspended solids — sewage applications, effluent pits in food factories, wash-down collection channels — are prone to impeller jamming. Locked-rotor current is typically 6–8× full-load current. A protection relay must recognise this condition as distinct from a normal start transient and trip within a defined time window.
4. Voltage Monitoring
Overvoltage and undervoltage outside the motor's design tolerance accelerate insulation ageing. In rural cold chain and agro-processing locations where utility supply quality is poor, integrated voltage monitoring prevents motors from operating under out-of-spec voltage conditions.
5. Auto-Restart with Configurable Delay
For fire pumps and booster sets in water utility applications, auto-restart after supply restoration is often a functional requirement. Manual restart in 24×7 unattended pump stations is simply impractical.

The UBZ-115 is a microprocessor-based single-phase protection unit and integrated motor starter for motors up to 2 kW (25A) on 230V/50Hz supply. It monitors both mains voltage parameters and motor current continuously, with programmable current thresholds from 0.5A to 25A. The Triac output makes it a direct starter, eliminating a separate contactor for small pumps. Its operating voltage range of 160–280V accommodates the voltage fluctuations common in agricultural and semi-urban supply feeders. The external remote-start input supports level-switch or timer-based automation without a separate PLC.

Common Selection Mistakes Engineers Make
Mistake 1: Using a thermal overload relay and calling it motor protection
A bimetallic thermal overload relay protects against sustained overcurrent. It does not detect phase loss, phase asymmetry, undervoltage, overvoltage or — critically for pumps — undercurrent (dry-run). For pump applications, a dedicated motor protection relay with voltage and current monitoring is required, not an overload relay alone.
Mistake 2: Selecting the wrong current range variant of the UBZ-301
The UBZ-301 is available in three current range variants. Selecting the 63–630A variant for a 7.5 kW (approximately 14A FLA) motor means the relay is operating at the extreme low end of its sensing range, which degrades dry-run detection accuracy. Always select the variant whose midrange comfortably covers your motor's full-load ampere rating.
Mistake 3: Skipping the CBCT for earth fault protection on submersible pumps
Submersible pump cables in wet sumps are the highest earth-fault risk point in any pump installation. The UBZ-301 is designed to work with a CBCT for residual current / earth fault detection. Omitting the CBCT leaves the installation without earth fault protection, which is a safety and statutory compliance gap under IS 13947 / IEC 60947 frameworks.
Mistake 4: Using UBZ-115 on motors above 2 kW
The UBZ-115 is rated for motors up to 2 kW / 25A on single-phase 230V supply. Using it on a higher-rated motor exceeds the device's designed protection envelope. Installation Tips for Pump Applications
- CT ratio selection: For the UBZ-301, verify that the CT primary rating matches the motor cable conductor size and that secondary output is 5A standard. Use metering-class CTs (0.5 accuracy class or better) for accurate undercurrent detection.
- Cable routing to CBCT: Route all three phase conductors and the neutral (if 4-pole) through the CBCT core aperture. Ensure the PE (protective earth) conductor bypasses the CBCT — earth fault detection depends on this wiring discipline.
- Start delay setting: For DOL-started pump motors, set the start inhibit time on the UBZ-301 to be at least 1.5× the motor's typical run-up time to avoid nuisance trips during starting inrush. For large-bore submersible sets, this may be 5–8 seconds.
- Undercurrent threshold for dry-run: Set the undercurrent threshold to approximately 40–60% of motor full-load current. This is below normal running current but above the relay's noise floor, and reliably indicates a pump running on air.
- UBZ-115 direct-on-line wiring: The UBZ-115's integrated Triac output acts as the main switching element. Ensure the device is mounted in a ventilated enclosure; Triac switching elements generate heat at sustained rated current.
- Auto-restart configuration: For fire pump and booster pump applications requiring automatic restart after supply restoration, configure the restart delay to comply with IS 15624 (fire pump controller requirements) or the plant's SOP — typically a defined delay to allow supply stabilisation before restart.
